My name is Sophie (they/them)

I’m a machine/handpoke tattoo artist and visual artist currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area where I was born and raised. I can be found on instagram under the handle @meta____morphosis.

My drawings emerge from practices of close noticing and depth of study with the lands I call home, (Coast Miwok, Awaswas Ohlone, and Raymatush Oholone). Through tattoo, I aim to support my clients embodied connection to the beautiful and complex ecologies and histories of the greater Bay Area. My practice lives at the intersection of bodily autonomy and bodily entanglement: where choosing transform one’s body with images from diverse local ecologies acts as a bridge to feeling the porosity and entanglement of our bodies with land. I love talking about tattooing and its intersection with queer ecology, decolonization, liberation.

I enjoy making tattoos through collaborative and experimental design processes with clients, and value the relational dimensions of this work as much as the craft itself. I offer several different kinds of collaborative tattoo sessions. Learn more about them.

I approach tattooing as a container in which to hone intuition, enact bodily autonomy, and feel into the potency of slow, deliberate transformation. I do my best to hold this container with an attentiveness to the power implicit in the exchange, the specificity of the client’s experience and identities, and a commitment to providing a safe, comfortable, and affirming tattoo experience.

I’m in my fourth year of full time tattooing, and constantly refining my technique. I am “community taught,” and indebted to the knowledge and generosity of many skilled artists.

Beyond tattooing I have (too many) projects! I am a part of several research and practice groups at the intersection of oral history, yiddish, ancestral practice, geopoetics and jewish mysticism. I make textiles and magic garments for friends & their babies; work on paper mache lamps; am learning ceramics; lead workshops that creatively engage people with watershed history, and more. Ask me about it!

When I’m not tattooing or drawing or pursuing these projects, I enjoy walking in the intertidal zone, knitting, reading, dancing, cooking, spending time with friends and family, and swimming in bodies of water.
